Cinnamon Powder Reduces Cancer

I have fond memories of mother buying cinnamon bread topped with frosting as a treat. For variety, we also liked to sprinkle cinnamon powder and sugar on regular bread. Now we make all our own bread and invariably add a teaspoon of cinnamon to the mix. The compliments we get for its flavor affirm our enjoyment of it.

Cinnamon is an ancient spice. Ancient books, including the Bible, contain cinnamon in recipes, especially because of its aroma. China was using cinnamon 2800 years before Christ. Egypt and Rome both used cinnamon in their embalming processes. Medicine and flavoring were other reasons Egyptians used cinnamon. A person's social rank could be determined by the number of spices he owned.

The word ‘cinnamon’ comes from the Greek word kinnamomon and this comes from the name Ceylon. Cinnamon is actually the bark of the tree. A rolled up piece of bark we call a cinnamon stick is officially called a quill. It can be purchased as quills or in the more useable form of a powder. Cinnamaldehyde is the chemical in cinnamon that gives it the fragrant flavor and taste.

Real cinnamon comes from Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) that exports 11,000 tons a year. To picture this amount, think of 150,000,000 large spice bottles filled with it! However, most cinnamon powder sold in the US is actually cassia or Chinese cinnamon. The sweeter Sri Lankan cinnamon is probably only available in spice shops.

Though it is true that cinnamon is most commonly viewed as a spice, it contains many health benefits. Studies have shown that just 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon per day can lower LDL cholesterol. Other studies suggest that cinnamon may help regulate blood sugar, making it especially beneficial for people with Type 2 diabetes.

The January 17th, 1995 issue of Weekly World News contained a list of 21 health problems or diseases that can be cured or at least helped by honey and cinnamon as researched by western scientists. These included toothache, common colds, insect bites, arthritis, heart diseased, and bladder infections.

Cinnamon reduces the spread of some cancer cells such as leukemia and lymphoma, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Maryland. It also aids in dissolving blood clots. For some, cinnamon has even reduced arthritic pain. Cinnamon is an excellent inhibitor of food spoilage and bacterial growth, meaning it a natural food preservative.

Cinnamon can help fight E. coli bacteria in unpasteurized juices and boosts cognitive abilities. It is a rich source of calcium, manganese, iron, and fiber, and helps remove bile from the bowel thus reducing the risk of colon cancer. Fiber in cinnamon can also help with the relief of constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.

Cinnamon has antifungal, antibacterial and antiparasitic properties. It helps fight off oral and vaginal yeast infections, and reduces the risk of head lice and stomach ulcers. It is due to its three basic types of essential oils that gives cinnamon this remarkable power.

A little known use of cinnamon is called ‘thieves’ oil’ because grave robbers would wash themselves in it to ward off the ‘demons’ of bubonic plague. {It is made from equal amounts of cinnamon bark, eucalyptus, lemon, and clove with rosemary therapeutic grade essential oils You make it mixing equal amounts of rosemary therapeutic grade essential oils and eucalyptus, cinnamon bark, lemon, and clove}. The formula is equal amounts of clove, lemon, eucalyptus, cinnamon bark, and rosemary therapeutic grade essential oils. Mix this in a carrier of either jojoba or olive oil.

In addition to all these uses of cinnamon, it has also been used for its warming qualities. Cinnamon, as a tea with ginger, provides relief from the onset of a flu or cold. For women this concoction has provided relief from some symptoms of PMS.

Don’t overuse cinnamon since large doses could be toxic. Neither should you let cinnamon replace medications you are taking. Fresh cinnamon should be stored in sealed glass containers in a cool dark place. As long as it smells like cinnamon, it is still fresh.

Cinnamon acts as a tonic to the entire body. Just make sure you purchase cinnamon powder from a store that sells bulk herbs so as to receive the full benefit this amazing spice has to offer.
